Fitness trend to try: polo

Posted on May 18, 2014 by Sasha Hartley

As the annual Polo by the Sea event on the Gold Coast approaches we have been thinking about the benefits of this ancient sport...our verdict? It's definitely a trend to try.

With devotees including the royals and supermodel Jodie Kidd, who boast its toning and core blasting benefits, we were definitely curious to find out more about this horseback sport. In Jodie's words "I'd encourage everyone to be as active as possible and polo is a great option for keeping fit. It's great for getting a nice toned bum!"...we definitely like the sound of that.

Polo is great as it is a team sport, and gives you a killer workout without it feeling like one. Polo is played in two teams of 4, with 6 rounds, or 'chukkars'. This gives for a really fast paced energetic workout, and as your charging down the field you hardly feel all the glute and core work that's going on to keep you fit.

Supermodel and equestrian Jodie Kidd says that her fitness routine consists of polo and pilates; the polo for a more cardio based workout and then pilates to strengthen and tone her muscles for when she's up in the saddle.

Playing polo also increases coordination, as you must balance and control the polo stick as well as the horse. This can help increase balance and coordination in all other exercises you do.
