Sleep is an anomaly for me right now. Deep sleep that is. The kind where you go to sleep at night and wake up 8 hours later, refreshed and jumping out of your bed. This has been the case for a while now - even before the new addition in my life. I'm one of those people that finds it hard to switch off my brain even at the best of times. I know so many of you do too.
Years ago, when I was going through the same - lack of sleep issue - someone recommended I try yoga Nidra with the sales pitch that 20 minutes would be equivalent to an hour or two restful nap. I was sold. 20 minutes is relatively easy to find in the day. A couple hours? not so much.
So, if like me, you often wake up asymmetrically twisted in sheets, sleep mask long gone, an hour-plus into “snoozing” your alarm, and unable to form full sentences until about an hour later when the coffee really kicks in, then please. READ ON. Vie Activist, and super zen yoga teacher, Lee Bachar has given us a downloadable Yoga Nidra before bed that is basically a meditation for dummies. And its only 10 minutes long!
Fear not. It's not as hippie-dippy as it sounds. Lee verrrrry slowwwllly talks you through drawing your focus to your breath, and then relaxing each finger, toe, joint, facial feature, etc. individually for fifteen minutes. It's like someone hitting the mute button on that never-ending internal dialogue (I know I am not the only one). And, with your mind quiet(er), and body relaxed, you can be assured you'll fall into some serious REM-cycle sleep.
