Guest Post: Lee Sutherland from Fitness in the City

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

Director of Fitness In The City, home to all things health, fitness and general wellbeing, Lee Sutherland is a health, fitness and wellbeing knowledge powerhouse. Her business includes personal training, bootcamps, health coaching, nutrition and herbal medicine consultations – everything you need to restore balance, health and motivation!! Lee also has a blog and website www.fitnessinthecity.com.au which goes into more detail of what she does, plus has a number of articles based on three principles: LIVE (interviews with inspiring and motivational health peeps) MOVE (exploring new workout, exercises etc) and NOURISH (healthy recipes, superfood info and nutritional info). Originally from WA (North of Perth, very rural..), Lee is now based in Sydney which she loves, "It has the beach vibe but space is never too far off for when you need to escape". We sit down for a chat to discuss her healthy and active life and what keeps her motivated.

What’s your favourite way to stay fit? Variety!! If you know what is coming every time you do a workout it gets stale very very quickly, that’s why it is so important to me (both personally and for my clients) to always mix up the workouts. This keeps both the body guessing and also my interest! Whether it is a yoga class, long coastal walk with friends, sprints, standup paddle-boarding, crossfit, tabata – it just has to be different.

I am currently doing my 4 week Spring ‘Nourish + Move’ challenge with my clients (more info here) which encourages you to increase clean food, decrease the bad, and to move daily, whether it is 15 minutes or full hour so that has been great incentive to try new workouts and fit in something ever when your schedule screams no.

What’s your style like when you’re working out and hanging out?   Inconsistent!! If you looked inside my wardrobe you would be very confused…. I have a lot (and I mean a lot) of workout gear and an ever increasing sneaker collection. I swap between amazing new workout gear for when I need a bit of a pep up, to old holey shirts I have had for 12 years. My ‘relaxed’ outfits are slowly become my workout clothes but luckily there are amazing options out there these days and I am sure no one notices half the time!

What’s your style like when you’re going out? Depending on my mood and location it could be my fave pair of jeans and singlet with lots of bracelets piled up on my wrist – hopefully channelling Nicole Richie and Erin Wasson style. It is never too prissy, always a tad rock, and bohemian and fashion rolled into one!

What does living an active life mean to you? It means everything to me. My life has absolutely transformed since I made the decision to lead a consistent active life and eating amazing nourishing food. It’s not about fitting into the skinny jeans (although that helps!) but about the effects it has on my mental/emotional state, and physical state - hormonal issues (PMS etc) is now non-existent which is a pretty big deal for me.

What are your makeup must-haves? I have slowly overhauled my beauty cabinet to reduce toxins and to purge unnecessary products.I have been using mineral foundation powder for a few years now and I have seen huge improvements with my skin. My latest discovery is Musq Cosmetics  and their mineral makeup is amazing, it is 100% natural, pure and organic you could literally eat it. I also love Ere Perez waterproof mascara – again they are an Australian owned company and ticks all the organic and toxic free boxes. I also get a tad panicy if I don’t have lip balm on hand, but I am still searching for the ultimate ‘one’!

The book on your bedside table right now: Nutrition books actually! I am upgrading my Advanced Diploma of Natural Health Science (Herbalism + Nutrition) to a Bachelor so I have dragged out the old books again. I am also reading ‘The Beauty Detox Solution’ and have ‘The Vogue Factor’ by Kirstie Clements ready to go for my next holiday read.

What or who is your biggest inspiration? I adore Instagram for daily inspiration whether it is the likes of Jess Ainscough from The Wellness Warrior, amazing ab pics from strangers or Lorna Jane posts (love their approach) – my whole feed is one big inspiration to me!
