Q & A with Pip Reed from PIPREED.COM.AU

Posted on November 19, 2013 by Sasha Hartley

Pip is a qualified nutritionist, certified personal trainer and soon to be Australia's first Yoga-Fit instructor, with over six years experience in the health and fitness industry.

Her passion lies in living a balanced lifestyle where food is used as medicine, and chocolate and wine are always in the pantry. Pip’s fresh insights into health and wellbeing are always realistic and designed to work with people’s lives - whether they’re busy, broke or just find it all a bit confusing. Her advice is always relevant and do-able.

Pip does not believe in fad diets, calorie counting or extreme exercise regimes. Pip’s ambition is to help others achieve a healthy life balance by focusing on nutrient-dense whole foods, and their effects on the body combined with a sustainable exercise program. She wholeheartedly believes that prevention is better than cure and teaches her clients how to live a sustainable happy healthy existence.

Pip is the Health Editor for Australia's fastest growing women's website Flamingo Pink and is also regularly interviewed for health advice in Cleo, Cosmo and NW magazines. She recently wrote her first eBook, ‘Sexy by Saturday’ for women’s health organisation, Jean Hailes.

Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I'm a country-turned-city girl, living in Sydney’s beautiful Double Bay. I’m a qualified nutritionist and personal trainer with a practice in Double Bay. Being from the country has given me a pretty humble outlook on life and my family keeps me grounded. I love this city for the beaches and you’ll find me swimming most days in summer. It’s my other form of grounding!

What’s your favourite way to stay fit?
I love being trained by the super capable boys down at No Fear Fitness in Double Bay. Just when I think I’ve finished, they throw in an extra 5 minutes of burpees. Cruel! I also love yoga, running and swimming laps with my bestie - we need each other to put our swim caps on.

What’s your style when you’re working out and hanging out?
I’ve always had a tomboy, sporty casual style so my workout and hang out clothes are pretty similar. I’m inclined to stay in my workout gear post workout as they’re so comfy, so wearing on trend gear is an added bonus!

What’s your style like when you’re going out?
I stay pretty sporty and casual, with black jeans, a simple well cut white tee and heels being a staple outfit. Im also loving the sport luxe fashion trend going on right now and dont mind teaming some slim fit trackies with heels.

What does living an active life mean to you?
It means staying sane! I need to work out for my mentality, to relax, to blow off steam and to boost endorphins. Being active helps me to make healthier food choices too and to ‘rethink that second (or third) drink”. I like to feel my best all the time and this is definitely unachievable with a hangover!

What are your makeup must-haves?
Organic SPF30+ sunscreen and bb cream, Max Factor mascara, a bit of coal eyeliner for night time and bronzer.

The book on your bedside table right now?
I just finished reading The Slap. I wanted to slap all of the characters.

What or who is your biggest inspiration?
My grandmother (so cliched Im sorry). At 89 years old she still lives on the farm tending to her chooks and garden, goes to aerobics with my mum (who is also an instructor and my other favourite human), has an Order of Australia for her charity work, and a kitchen that is heaven on earth. I don't eat for a week before I head home to make room for it all! Other than that, she’s hardworking, charitable, kind and generous. I’m so blessed to have her.

Can you share a typical workout?
I love high intensity interval training, so I’ll jump on the treadmill at No Fear Fitness and after a quick warm up, combine 1 minute sprints with 30 second rests for 15 minutes. Then I'll get stuck into weights and body weight resistance super-sets, followed by another cardio interval session on the bike or cross-trainer and core exercises. I usually finish off with another bout of cardio and a much needed stretch. Intense!

Top 10 things always in your gymbag?
Sunscreen, sunglasses, boxing glove inserts (hopefully clean ones), therabands, small hand weights, nike weighted skipping rope, boxing gloves and pads, Lanolips and cash for a post workout coconut water.
